River bottoms in the middle, till and prairie edge around it
The South Fork Crow River runs through the center of Hutchinson, and the dam on Main Street backs it up into Otter Lake and Campbell Lake on the west side of town, a basin about 1.3 miles long. Lots along the river corridor and around the two lakes sit on alluvial soils that hold water and can be soft under load, so foundations and flatwork there get more attention to base depth, drainage, and sometimes soil correction.
Away from the river, the ground is glacial till like the rest of our service area. Hutchinson also sits near the line where the old Big Woods gave way to prairie, and west of town the terrain flattens out. Frost depth in McLeod County is the same 42 inches we work to everywhere else under the Minnesota Residential Code.

Township work is a little unusual: even though Glencoe is the McLeod County seat, the county's Environmental Services office, which handles planning and zoning and land use permits, is located in Hutchinson on 5th Avenue SE. In the city or out in Acoma or Lynn Township, the permit office is in town either way.
Driveways that connect to Highway 7, 15, or 22 need a MnDOT access permit in addition to the local one. We flag that during the estimate so it doesn't hold up the schedule.
